Thursday, March 15 • Mars Bar/Cafe Venus • 609 Eastlake Ave E, Seattle • $7 • 21+

  • Dave Webb Band (9 p.m.)

Seattle-based rock and metal guitarist Dave Webb founded Girth, Wah-Wah Exit Wound, and Spacebag. Dave Abramson plays drums and percussion with Seattle bands Diminished Men and Master Musicians of Bukkake and has also worked with the likes of Eyvind Kang, Secret Chiefs 3, Climax Golden Twins, Wally Shoup, Six Organs of Admittance, Kayo Dot, Damo Suzuki, and The Boredoms. Trumpeter and composer Mike Van Bebber has performed with many notable jazz artists including Lee Konitz, John Pizzarelli, the Woody Herman Band, John Fedchock, and Pat LaBarbara.

Fundamental Forces is an instrumental quartet that dances a balance between the dark and the light. The ensemble is fronted by electric guitarist Rik Wright and longtime co-conspirator James DeJoie, who utilizes an impressive variety of wind instruments with great facility. The two are joined by the adept and adventurous backline of esteemed double-bassist Geoff Harper and celebrated drummer/percussionist Greg Campbell. The group’s collective musical presence is hauntingly beautiful, thoughtful, and evocative, and their performances effectively pull together the two extremes of acoustic and electric jazz without sacrificing the crystalline character of either.

The Simon Henneman Quartet plays original music inspired by classic jazz – music deeply rooted in swing and blues, yet at the same time distinctly modern, fresh, and unexpected. It’s garage jazz at its finest by some of the most creative, experienced, and tenacious musicians in Seattle: Simon Henneman (guitar), Kenny Mandell (saxophone), John Seman (bass), and Mark Ostrowski (drums).
