Thursday, November 8 • Lucid • 5241 University Way NE, Seattle • 9-11 p.m. • $15 (includes $10 bar tab)
Zero-G helps to celebrate our host Lucid‘s fourth anniversary with a special presentation featuring Wally Shoup and Jason Goessl’s respective quartets.
WALLY SHOUP QUARTET (9 p.m.)
Energy, intensity, lyricism – several of the qualities of the Wally Shoup Quartet, who draw from many strains of jazz – bop, free, oblique, swing, and blues – to present lively, rhythmic, and above all heartfelt free expression. Led by Wally’s deep-toned serpentine alto sax and Bob Rees‘s vibes virtuosity, the Quartet flows effortlessly from sultry blues to Sun Ra-ish sonic excursions in the blink of an eye, with an ear for surprise and improvisational prowess. Bassist John Seman and drummer Mark Ostrowski propel the music forward yet also manage to shape its melodic contours. Group interaction and creative interplay are a big part of the sound of the Quartet, who carry forward the notion that jazz sounds best when played on the razor’s edge of the moment.
JASON GOESSL QUARTET (10 p.m.)
Zero-G co-presenter / guitarist extraordinaire Jason Goessl helms a formidable quartet for a set of incandescent modern jazz. With Ryan Burns (keyboards), Birch Pereira (bass), and Brian Oppel (drums).
